2022 Nissan Z Preview: This Is The Nissan Z Proto

Five decades of Z heritage are clearly visible in this preview of the next-generation Nissan Z car. This is the Nissan Z Proto, a precursor to the production Z that we expect will be called the 400Z and come to market as a 2022 model.

What do we know? There will be a manual transmission (thank goodness, as so many alleged sports cars drop the DIY shifter) and it will be linked to a twin-turbocharged V6 that's likely pushing around 400 horsepower to the rear wheels.

The Proto Z uses a yellow pearlescent paint that's similar to a paint scheme from the first Z and the 300ZX. But the colour isn't the only aspect of the Z Proto that draws on the iconic nameplate's history.

The roofline. The grille shape. The headlights' half-moon. The 300ZX's taillight shape.

Every crease and character line is reminiscent. Nothing is a copy, and the Z Proto certainly doesn't draw from one specific Z generation. There have been six in total, and the Z Proto suggests that the next-generation Z will use suggestions from each to create a cohesive sports car package.

The Z Proto is also a bit longer, wider, and lower than the outgoing 370Z; a classic approach to creating an even more alluring stance.

There's a full gallery of images below, and you can also watch last night's stream of the unveiling. We'll keep you posted as Z updates seep out over the coming months.
