This Is Not Your Grandfather's SUV Fuel Efficiency – The 2023 Nissan Rogue, By The Numbers
November 07 2022, Centennial Nissan
A little more than a decade ago, in 2009, over half of the new vehicles sold in Canada were passenger cars. Think Nissan Sentra, Altima, Maxima, Versa.
Fast forward to 2022, and over half of the new vehicles sold in Canada are now SUVs. That includes bigger utility vehicles such as the Nissan Armada, Pathfinder, and Murano; smaller crossovers such as the Kicks and Qashqai; and SUVs in Canada's most popular segment such as the Nissan Rogue.
All too often, people think about SUVs and assume that the associated fuel efficiency is too painful a price to bear. But the fuel efficiency of, say, the 201-horsepower 2023 Nissan Rogue SV should not – and cannot – be linked with the fuel efficiency of a 2001 Ford Expedition.
In fact, the 2023 Nissan Rogue's optional engine (it's standard in the SV, Midnight Edition, SL, and Platinum) isn't just the most powerful Rogue engine ever, it's also the most fuel efficient. According to Natural Resources Canada's Office of Energy Efficiency, the all-wheel-drive 2023 Rogue SV with the new turbocharged 1.5-liter engine is rated at 8.4 L/100km in the city; 7.6 L/100km in mixed driving, and an astonishing 6.7 L/100km on the highway.
That's actually better fuel economy than you'd see in the 2023 Nissan Altima, better than the fuel economy in a manual-shift 2022 Nissan Sentra, and 25% better than the original Nissan Rogue from 2008.
But what does all of this look like on your wallet when gas is selling at $1.95/litre? Let's look at a few scenarios using the official government fuel economy ratings.
We did some quick math based on combined fuel economy ratings, 10,000 kilometres per year of driving, and an average fuel cost of $1.95 per litre. The results show a Nissan Rogue that has become wildly more fuel efficient while also adding safety tech, space, features, and power.
